Extended Biography

Michelle Marroquin has been involved in the Movement Arts since she was a child, learning ballet, folk and modern dance forms since the age of 6. At the age of 18 Michelle traveled to New England to study biology, dance and anthropology at Hampshire College, where she received a Bachelors of Liberal Arts Degree in 1993.

As a professional dancer, Michelle performed in Mexico and New York City with artists such as Ivonne Muñoz, Yanira Castro, Tony Silva, David Dorfman and Zvi Gotheiner. While training in New York City, Michelle searched for essential movement techniques that could train the body without affecting it stylistically. Michelle explored various different disciplines finding an answer in Gyrotonic Training and went on to study under Juliu Horvath, the creator of the system. She completed her 7 Progressions Teacher Training Course at White Cloud Studio in 1996. While Juliu was developing and codifying his explorations, Gyrotonic was often referred to as “Yoga for Dancers” or “Yoga with Equipment”. This prompted Michelle to explore Hatha Yoga, taking classes with a variety of Masters, and completing a Teacher Training Certification in 2001 at Integral Yoga Institute.

Michelle taught for over 8 at Studio Riverside (the longest running Gyrotonic Studio) under the tutelage of Leda Franklin, one of Juliu’s original Master Trainers. This long apprenticeship involved ongoing laboratories in movement rehabilitation and constant dialogue with a team of extraordinary teachers including: Miriam Barbosa, Erica Hassan, Gina Paolillo, Anne Sellery and Kate Pagliosotti. During this 8 year period, Michelle attended Juliu's trainings continuosly, and taught a wide variety of people including dancers from the Graham Dance Company, New York City Ballet and Dance Theatre of Harlem.

In 2003, after 9 years of dancing professionally and teaching in New York City, Michelle and her husband, Tony Silva, moved to the Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts to live and work and teach. Currently, Michelle is an MFA student and Teaching Fellow at Smith college. She teaches at VegaYoga & Movement Arts and conducts Gyrotonic private sessions and Gyrokinesis workshops.
